General Information for Portuguese Classes (Group of 3 – 7 students)

Duration: Our basic term comprises of 10 Classes of 90 minutes, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Venue: Room 2, 247-251 Flinders Lane Melbourne
Term fee: $380.00
Text / Exercise Book: We have adopted the book “Bem Vindo” to use from the Beginners to the Advanced levels. This book is not included in the term fee and if you wish to purchase these material from ABRISA the costs are:

  • Text Book: $105.00
  • Exercise Book: $50.00

Portuguese Classes – Levels Available 

  • Beginners – divided in sub-levels and cater for persons who are new to the language and for those who have already made a start, but need to improve the grammar for further development
  • Intermediate – comprising of sub-levels (Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate) this level is of longer duration and focus on strengthening grammar and vocabulary.
  • Advanced – predominately conversational but also designed to refine and enrich the grammar. It also addresses the need of those who already speak the language fluently, but would like to keep practicing.
  • Portuguese Conversations – The program aims to focus only on conversations in a practical and entertaining way. With this you are able to practice and also gain insights in the Brazilian culture.
  • Travelling to Brazil – Short Course – The aim of this short course is to support travellers and families wishing to go to Brazil and have the knowledge to have basic Portuguese conversations.

TERMS AND TIMES – 2024

PORTUGUESE CLASSES TERMS 2024

  • The Term is comprised of 10 x 1.5 hour classes
  • Term 1: 29th January to 5th April 2024
  • Term 2: 15th April to 28th June 2024
  • Term 3: 15th July to 20th September 2024
  • Term 4: 7th October to 20th December 2024
  • Note: No classes will be held on public holidays.  Classes extended to cater for any missed ones impacted by Public Holidays
  • Private Tuition Also Available Upon Request.

Public Holidays – There are no classes on Public Holidays and discussions will be held by the teacher on make up classes.  The 2024 Public Holidays which impact our Portuguese class schedule follows:

  • Monday 11th Mar 2024 – Labour Day
  • Friday 29th March 2024 – Good Friday 
  • Monday 1st April 2024 – Easter Monday
  • Tuesday 25th April 2024 – ANZAC Day
  • Monday 10th Jun 2024 – King’s Birthday
  • Friday – 27th Sep 2024 – AFL Grand Final Friday
  • Tuesday 5th Nov 2024 – Melbourne Cup Day

PORTUGUESE CLASS TIMES

  • All Classes 6:00PM – 7:30PM
  • Classes are typically held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

PAYMENT DETAILS

The Registration Process enables you to select the Term and Books and effect the payment via Credit Cards online.  This is the preferred method of payment as it reduces our administration overheads.

BENEFITS OF PORTUGUESE CLASSES WITH ABRISA

These Portuguese Classes are a significant source of funding to keep the ABRISA, Brazilian Association, operating. By enrolling, you are contributing to keeping this association, which aims at integrating Brazilian and Australian culture, alive!

By enrolling, you will:
1. Receive a copy of the electronic newsletters as they are published; and
2. Have access to The Gracila Stone Portuguese Books Library (based at ABRISA)
3. ABRISA student membership entitling you to discount to events;
4. Have the opportunity of attending ABRISA events and practice the Portuguese Language.
5. Be directly assisting the operation of this Not for Profit Association, which exists to support its membership and the wider community.

FAQ – ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS FOR PORTUGUESE CLASSES WITH LESS THAN 3 STUDENTS 

Whilst we are not always able to offer the group classes if there is an insufficient number of students, we offer the following alternatives:

1 x Student: A shorter term of 6 classes of 60 minutes at the same cost ($380 – Note: This is subject to facility and teacher availability;
2 x Students: A shorter term of 8 classes of 90 minutes at the same cost ($380).
One on One Lessons: One on one classes negotiated with the Portuguese Class Coordinator. You would need to determine how many classes you would like to have and pre-paid directly to ABRISA.
60 Minutes Class: $70 per class (Between 4:00pm and 5:30pm only, Monday to Thursday)
90 Minutes Class: $105 per class (Between 4:00pm and 7:30pm, Monday to Thursday)

PLEASE NOTE:
The alternative arrangements are discussed and agreed directly with the Coordinator of the Portuguese classes via e-mail (portclass@abrisa.org.au).
We require pre-payment of the class(es), directly to the ABRISA account or as agreed with the Coordinator.

FAQ – REFUND POLICY

ABRISA is happy to refund the term fee is most circumstances. It is however vital that you inform us in writing that you do not wish to continue, as soon as you make this decision (portclass@abrisa.org.au)

Please note that ABRISA is a not for profit organization and our Portuguese Classes are a fund raising activity. As such, only a small percentage of the course fees stays with the organization – most of it is to pay the running costs.

The refund rules below were made to ensure that, if you give up our classes, we are able to honor the commitment we made to the remaining students without financial loss.

FULL FEE REFUND

1. If you give up the classes before they start, or
2. Up to the first week of the term (one class attended only).
3. If ABRISA decides not to run the level you subscribed to and there are no other alternatives mutually agreed upon between ABRISA and you.

PARTIAL REFUNDS

4. If you stop after attending the first 2 classes (70% of Term fee)
5. If you stop after attending after the first 3 classes (50% of Term fee)
6. If you do not start classes and do not engage the Portuguese Class Administrator (portclass@abrisa.org.au), no refund will be issued.
7. If for any reason ABRISA cannot run one specific class and cannot arrange a reposition of that class, you will be reimbursed the pro-rata value of the class.

NO REFUND

There is no refund if you:
8. Stop after attending the first 4 or more classes (consecutive or alternate), or
9. Do not communicate to ABRISA (in advance – to portclass@abrisa.org.au) that you are no longer attending the classes

2020 New Portuguese Courses – Conversation and Travelling to Brazil!

New Programs

ABRISA is pleased to announce the availability of two new Portuguese Programs.  

These can be delivered at individual level or in groups.  As per the current Portuguese Classes program, the number of classes will depend on the number of enrolled students.

Portuguese Conversations

The program aims to focus only on conversations in a practical and entertaining way. With this you are able to practice and also gain insights in the Brazilian culture.

Travelling to Brazil – Short Course

The aim of this short course is to support travellers and families wishing to go to Brazil and have the knowledge to have basic Portuguese conversations.

2020 Adult Portuguese Classes Now Open – New Courses!

ABRISA is pleased to announce that the 2020 Portuguese Class Calendar has now been published. 

ABRISA is also pleased to announce that we will be introducing the following additional courses to the current Portuguese School Program:

  • Portuguese conversation classes.
